	Water within the built environment is typically seen as an excess. Observations I made of its presence dripping and pooling within the Junction Box, a disused industrial site in Woolwich, demonstrate its ability to erode and take control, subverting the way we treat water within architecture. 

In response to a lack of suitable nurseries in Woolwich and the increase in need due to the Faraday Works redevelopment, my project proposes a water play nursery on the ground floor. The current nursery education structure was originally intended to bring up Victorian children to work in factories such as those on site. At a time where this approach is being revised, there is potential to use the nursery as a testbed for the more creative education style of the Finnish system which champions learning through play.

Adopting three design strategies that stem from the qualities of water – materiality, water play and scale – space becomes an implicit teaching tool for the Finnish curriculum. Water is also used throughout the project as a co-author, challenging my autonomy as the designer and allowing it to once again take control.

	This project investigated the behaviours of people waiting within three moments in the BMA
House in Bloomsbury, as well as visualising sound heard there and analysing materiality and texture.
These observations led to a “bricolage” model highlighting the dualities between the interior and exterior spaces.The BMA House was once the site of Charles Dickens’ house where he wrote A Tale of Two Cities. A key theme of this book is duality, which led to observations of the site that aimed to find the differences and similarities between the interior and exterior spaces. These models and drawings are the accumulation and translation of these observations.

Windows Across the British Colonial Continuum - A Visual Essay.

	A well-lit and ventilated room is critical to our health and wellbeing. Studies show that light and air affect our sleep, stress levels, bone density, eye health and metabolism. When a tax was levied on the number of&#38;nbsp; windows a house had in Britain during the
18th and 19th centuries, the impact was catastrophic. As Britain went on to colonise Singapore and Hong Kong shortly after
this tax, despite knowing how important windows were to the health of the population, the architecture they built shows a complete
lack of consideration to this matter. This cartography aims to analyse the design
of windows within Britain and across its colonies of Singapore and Hong Kong during the 19th and 20th centuries, and the legacy it
has left within public housing.


The Window Tax was a tax on the number of windows in a building that was introduced
in England in 1696 and lasted until 1851. To alleviate the tax burden on the poor, an exemption from the Window Tax was
introduced for cottages with fewer than seven windows. However, this exemption proved to be ineffective in urban areas where
the poor lived in large tenement blocks, which were taxed as a single entity despite having several windows per apartment. Poor
families would block up windows to avoid paying the tax, leading to poor ventilation and dampness, causing an increase in
diseases such as smallpox and malaria. The second cholera epidemic in 1848 was the catalyst to having the tax repealed in 1851.


It was at this point in time that Britain was beginning to colonise Hong Kong and Singapore. Britain colonised Hong Kong in 1842, after the First Opium War and Singapore in 1824. In response to the rapidly
growing population, Tong Lau in Hong Kong and Shophouses in Singapore – two very similar housing typologies were built for
the citizens. They were often cramped and unsanitary, with poor ventilation and limited access to natural light. As a result of the 1898
bubonic plague in Hong Kong, the Buildings
Ordinance set out a series of building regulations that imposed a greater number
of windows throughout the building to improve both light and ventilation. A similar law was implemented in Singapore which
led to internal courtyards and lightwells being added to later shophouse designs. It is interesting to compare the designs of
the Tong Lau and Shophouses to that of the private housing for the coloniser families. The typically Classical style homes in Hong
Kong and the Black and White Bungalows of Singapore incorporate large windows across the façade, maximising light and air.

The legacy of the Window Tax can be seen in the public housing of Britain and postcolonial
Hong Kong and Singapore. The design of large-scale council estates in the
second half of the 20th century in Britain perpetuate poor lighting and ventilation
conditions, creating a link to the legacy left behind by British colonial rule, as many of the people living in these council estates come
from ex-colonies. Public housing in Hong
Kong and Singapore have many features stemming from their colonial architecture,
but have demonstrated an ability to learn from the design mistakes by incorporating better ventilation and lighting techniques.

In conclusion, it is clear that the impact of the Window Tax has extended beyond 18th
century England, influencing the design
of windows and affecting health across the British colonial continuum.

This project aims to uncover the relationship between the landscape and performance art piece "Boot aus Stein" by Hannsjorg Voth and the painting "Venus and Mars" by Sandro Botticelli. An initial exploration into these pieces discovered a conflicting relationship between the two; whilst "Boot aus Stein" is concerned with restraint and discipline, "Venus and Mars" is about a complete defiance of those traits. Through models and drawings, "Venus and Mars" is depicted as being the exterior of Voth's pyramid, placing any distractions into the outside world. The layers of the pyramid can be peeled back, revealing the different instances of self-control Voth enacted during his time there.


This exploration then led to a group project installation. We decided on the idea of creating a viewing device that would highlight specific views outside Stevens Building, RCA that show people spending varying amounts of time. You would then look at these views through “filters” that can affect your perception of time.

A Slow Fashion Silk Workshop on West Lake in Hangzhou, China

	Though the relationship between the environment and silk production in Hangzhou
was once symbiotic, mass industralisation in the past 40 years has led to silk factories being detrimental to rural Hangzhou. The
project is sited in the area most affected, West Lake, a landscape known for its stunning views named the “Ten Scenes”.

As silk workers begin to lose their jobs due to technological advancements in the industry, this project aims to offer them a better environment to preserve their craft. In so doing, the building pioneers the Slow Fashion Movement whilst “giving back” to West Lake when historically the industry has only taken away.During autumn and spring, silkworms live upon a robotically 3D-printed
voronoi (a pattern spun by silkworms) canopy optimised for cocoon
production. This biodegrades over winter and summer. The outdoor
cocoons mimic clouds floating between the workshop spaces, inspired by one
of the Ten Scenes of West Lake.

The architectural composition stems from the Ten Scenes and the atmospheric by-products of silk production, many of which relate to water. The building produces clouds from silk and steam, mimics the melting of snow and uses water as a reflector, lighting instrument and datum shifter. When viewed from the lake, these elements combine to create the illusion of a surreal mountain range floating&#38;nbsp; amidst the sky.

This is the Eleventh Scene.
